About this site
JAPAN MANNERS LAB is a web app for learning Japanese manners around food, transport, onsen, shrines and temples, and daily life through illustrations and quizzes.
It is made for visitors to Japan, and also for people living in Japan who may discover the reasons behind familiar habits.
Manners are not about policing people. They grew out of consideration for others and for local communities. This site is about understanding the reasons and enjoying them, never about blaming anyone for not knowing.
What we care about
- We clearly separate laws and ordinances, facility rules, everyday customs and traditional etiquette.
- When a custom is not nationwide, we say that it differs by region or facility.
- We avoid stereotypes such as "all Japanese people do this", and never look down on other cultures.
- We check public and official sources and list them on every article.
About translations
Content is checked in Japanese and English first, then translated into seven more languages with AI assistance. The translations have not yet been proofread by native speakers. If something reads unnaturally, please let us know.
